Torsion’s Current Monetization Strategy

I don’t have more than the guiding principle of my brand right now: Ethical.

As of right this moment, that means to me as the Editor/only writer that:

  • I will accept monetary donations only if you are clear that you want the money to go to Torsion (be specific if you’re funding a certain feature or artist), me as the Editor, or whatever else. If it is a donation you give freely with no terms, I want to say both thank you and I feel uncomfortable with it but am grateful. I’d feel better if I could use your money the way you want me to and you tell me how, but if you don’t I’ll try to earn the title of an ethical brand the way one must do so every hour of every day.

  • I gratefully accept Information Donations: Tell me what I should look into if it made you excited or you found it or this one person who did ___ on a platform said something cool. It will make me curious AND it might help a reader, we call that a win-win in negotiations.

  • I accept sponsors. I can list your names if that would make you happy or enable a good outcome for you, I’d love that1 We will need to sign a contract, because I’ve been a negotiator too long to think sponsorship comes for free and forever.

  • I will probably list Ad Spaces like Beehiv suggests. It is important to me that I carefully review who is listed in this newsletter as we are focused on Advocacy, Research, and Awareness. That comes in many forms and shapes, but please know it is a conversation I’d like to have. I am not quite ready to collect information on Advertising yet, but I will plan to release a form later/

  • I would love if you would read Torsion. I’d love more if you loved it but that’s up to you. If you can’t pay for anything that’s fine, the goal of this newsletter is not to charge people, it is to be a place of advocacy, solidarity, and resource sharing. If you like Torsion, would you consider sharing it, contributing to it, etc.? Or if you know someone that might be able to open doors for this newsletter, would you be willing to make an introduction so I can speak with them?

What Torsion’s Monetization Strategy Is Not

I am choosing not to paywall Torsion at this time. Healthcare information is hard enough to find and understand, I’m not going to gatekeep content. There is a time, place, and format for that, and this isn’t it.

Torsion is not expected to be acquired, sold, or to generate any revenue at all this quarter. That is not the purpose, and I have no analytics to assess its capability, so our monetization strategy is not, ‘someone acquire me’. If you want to acquire Torsion, I’d need to believe you can give it something I can’t, and that’s unlikely to be true or even desired this quarter.

Newsletters that want to generate money are not inherently evil (you can then afford great people with influence, after all, who can spread more awareness. It’s always about how you handle money, not the money itself, after all) but that’s not the right fit for this quarter.

Our Monetization strategy may change later upon re-assessment.

Ethical Monetization Aimed at Torsion

If you try to sell me services on Torsion this quarter, then you need to be ready to be authentic, honest, and have a very good negotiation strategy. My time is limited, I’m recovering from surgery, I work a day job, and I’m one of the best negotiators I know. You need analytics, proof of what you bring, proof of how you’ll bring it, you need to be kind and care about people (yes, even if you’re both rich and famous which I respect but am not influenced by), and you need to be willing to be told no because as with all sales, you’re more likely to get a no than a yes.

If you want this to be your portfolio piece or your next big thing or you want me to pay you for the honor of you being features, awesome! I love that for you. Be honest about that and bring all the above, otherwise we’re not a good fit for a conversation. I want you to win, but not at the expense of what this newsletter is for. It’s that simple for me.

Final Thoughts

If you’re still here, thanks for reading. I hope Torsion sounds interesting, but even if it doesn’t, I appreciate you being here and giving it a shot. As a fellow person, that’s really all I can ask.

And finally, a hand-written thank you note:
